Ways to old wine press sites

If you stand on the blast tower of the Öhringen collegiate church, you can see almost the entire wine press circuit. To get up there, you have to climb over 165 steps. Unfortunately, the tower museum is currently closed. Below in the crypt of the collegiate church, in the heart of the royal seat, rests the Empress Mother Adelheid, the ancestral mother of the Salians and Staufers. The Öhringen and Untersteinbach chapters of the Swabian Albverein have marked out the Keltern-Runde. These are hiking trails to places where wine presses once stood.

Most. But there are still vineyards elsewhere in the town of Öhringen and in the Pfedelbach district, from whose grapes good wines are produced. Hikers can convince themselves of this in the hospitable places. Today, wine from the surrounding area is pressed at the Hohenlohe winery and in the princely wine press in Öhringen-Verrenberg. Large, decorative barrels are a reminder of the great days of viticulture in Öhringen and Pfedelbach. The princely barrel in the wine museum under the Langen Bau in Pfedelbach has a capacity of almost 65,000 liters. A man could drink wine from it for 59 years and 26 days if he limited himself to three liters a day. The famous barrel was built in 1752. Not quite as large, but still impressive and beautiful is the wine barrel in the Öhringen castle cellar on the market square. It holds 22,000 liters and dates back to 1702. The Rebenmännle in Öhringen's Weygang Museum in Karlsvorstadt is small but special. It was carved from a vine root. This butt carrier also makes reference to winegrowing in Öhringen. In order to be able to press the grapes from the surrounding vineyards, there were eight wine presses in the vicinity of Öhringen and Pfedelbach. They are all no longer standing. But the wine press stones, to which the wine press circuit leads, are reminders of six locations. There are also information boards along the way. It goes through orchards, past gardens and through hollow paths framed by hedges.
