Description

The hike starts in the town center/train station of the wine town of Freyburg. Along the edge of the forest, you can enjoy the view of Schweigenberg, the terrace vineyards, and vineyard houses. High above the Unstrut Valley, you can see the monastery church of Zscheiplitz.
It continues across meadows and through a deciduous forest, the view from above reminiscent of an amphitheater.
The sky is fairy blue and kite-flown - this is how the Rödel plateau presents itself with its diverse flora. Koniks were settled to preserve the dry grassland and prevent overgrowth.
In the past, shell limestone was extracted from numerous quarries on the Rödel. Some of these old quarries are still open and visible, while nature has reclaimed others. A sunken lane leads through the forest and orchard to the village of Nißmitz.
Over the Unstrut meadows with a view of Neuenburg Castle and the Ducal Vineyard, you hike back to Freyburg.
