Dümmer-Alfsee-Tour

Scenic diversityThe Mountain and Lake Tour connects two lakes that are of great interest both from a tourist and natural history perspective. The route runs mostly on low-traffic roads, largely within the Dümmer Nature Park. The sections at Alfsee and through Rieste are located in the neighboring TERRA.vita Nature Park. The tour leads between the lakes through the forested heights of the Dammer Berge, which protrude from the lowlands as relics of the Saale Ice Age. In addition to some inclines, this section of the route offers a wonderful view over the Dümmerniederung and the Großes Moor all the way to the Wiehengebirge from the observation tower on Mordkuhlenberg. At the edge of the forest between Damme and Holdorf lies the site of the medieval Dersaburg. The defensive walls and ditches are still partially visible today. The forest paths here are gravelled but easily navigable by touring bike or mountain bike. Near Rieste, the Kommende Lage is inviting for a visit and rest. The monastery church consecrated in 1426 houses a life-size crucifix inside. This cross remains a destination for many thousands of pilgrims to this day. Between Vörden and Damme airfield, the route passes through peaceful small farming communities. It becomes secluded between the airfield and the Dümmerniederung. Here, you travel along the interface of the Großes Moor to the agriculturally used areas on easily navigable gravel roads.
