Paddling on the Wümme: Lauenbrück - Sottrum

The Wümme rises in the nature reserve of the Lüneburg Heath, in the Wümmequellgrund below the Wulfsberg. From there it flows 150 km through a diverse landscape before joining the Lesum at Ritterhude with the Hamme, which in turn flows into the Weser at Vegsack.Numerous plants and animals are protected here. The otter can be found here again. Many other animals also use the Wümme as their habitat. This includes the kingfisher, which builds its nesting holes in the steep banks of the Wümme. The reeds and tall herbaceous plants growing along the Wümme appear inviting. Splashes of color from yellow water lilies, purple loosestrife, or water mint accompany visitors on their river trip.A special natural spectacle takes place annually in spring and autumn when migratory birds, especially cranes, rest in the expanses of the Wümme meadows during their long flights.Nature-friendly paddlingThanks to nature conservation measures, the Wümme now offers numerous rare plant and animal species a home again. Life at and in the river may not always be apparent at first glance, but these are very sensitive ecosystems that work highly productively - completely without human intervention. Humans are guests here and should behave accordingly. Therefore, please follow the Golden Rules when planning and carrying out your trip so that the Wümme remains a valuable habitat in the future. Violations can be punished with a fine.Navigability/RulesNavigating the Wümme is only possible when the water level allows it. According to the regulation of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district that came into force on June 16, 2015, the reference level of the NLWKN in Hellwege is decisive for water sports.Boat registration before the tripBefore starting your trip with your own boat, you must register your boat once with the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.
