Mining trail at Eisernhardt (Big Round)

The association for mining in the Siegerland region (VSB) conducted various projects between 2005 and 2016 to preserve relics of mining in the Siegerland area in the city of Siegen and on the Eisernhardt. Some tunnels of the old mines were uncovered and provided with a new, environmentally friendly development at the mouth area. Models from the 19th century were used to create the tunnel entrances as authentically as possible. After the work was completed, these mines were integrated into a circular hiking trail.
In this extended version of the circular hiking trail, hikers are provided with information on 10 panels about the themes of mining in the Siegerland region from ancient times. For well over 2000 years, iron ore as well as valuable non-ferrous metal ores were mined and smelted in the Eisernhardt area. The traces of mining are still visible in many places on the 482m high mountain. The oldest mines were located where the ore veins came to the surface. We would like to guide you to these places.
