EifelSpur On the Trail of the Robber Knights

Where did the knights stay in the Nordeifel and what did their castle complexes look like? These questions are answered in a beautiful way by the Eifel trail "In the Footsteps of the Robber Knights", which passes by impressive sights in Hellenthal and Reifferscheid over 14 kilometers. The circular hiking trail leads through the historic castle town of Reifferscheid to the medieval castle complex with its remains. The tour is considered a moderately difficult hike with a constant change of ascents and descents. The physical exertion is rewarded with numerous breathtaking views. Forest sofas provide a good place to catch your breath and enjoy the panorama.
The starting and ending point of this hike is naturally a castle. To be precise, the hilltop castle of Reifferscheid. The center of Reifferscheid can be easily reached by public transport (TaxiBusPlus from Hellenthal station). From the bus stop in Reifferscheid, it is only about a ten-minute walk to the castle. After the start, head through the castle courtyard entrance towards the north. The tour leads up the Kirchenberg along the Olef. This hill is circumvented and then it goes downhill to Blumenthal and further to the Kuhberg. Then continue on to the old castle ruins in the area of "Altenberg" and back to Reifferscheid via partly steep switchbacks.
It's worth taking a break every now and then. Numerous cafes and restaurants in Hellenthal or Reifferscheid are particularly suitable for this. The perfect end to the day is a visit to the hilltop castle of Reifferscheid with its castle garden.
