The Elbe-Heide-Tour connects two of the largest highlights of the Wendland region and shows you the beauty of the heath and the Elbe river meadows. The region between the Elbe and the heath is shaped by the ice age. The Höhbeck, which you cross on your tour, for example, is a geest island that has been preserved from the ice age. After the Vistula Ice Age, huge amounts of sand were deposited as the ice melted. Over time, the sand was blown into meter-high dunes and predominantly covered by heath. In the early 18th century, this nutrient-poor landscape was afforested with pine trees and the heath disappeared. After a catastrophic forest fire in 1975, a large heath area developed again at Nemitz on the burnt areas. The Nemitzer Heide is now a recognized bird sanctuary and has a high importance in international species protection. The Nemitzer Heidehaus between Trebel and Nemitz is the ideal starting point for a detour through the blooming heath.
