Description by the author

The special magic of the Rhine has captivated people for centuries. On its long journey from the Alps to the North Sea, the mighty river also flows through the western Ruhr area. Wide floodplains and fields shape the image of the Rhine here with us. This RevierRoute introduces this important habitat for flora and fauna.
The starting point
Cyclists who want to arrive by public transport should start at the train station in Wesel. However, the city traffic here is not optimal for cyclists until the RevierRoute. For drivers, junction 61 is more suitable. South of Wesel on the western bank of the Rhine is the Hotel Wacht am Rhein, from where the actual circular route to the south can be easily started.
Always heading south
First, the tour runs from the train station to the Rhine and over the bridge to the western bank. Then, cycling continues on the dam towards the south. Many sights are not along the way, instead, nature and landscape take center stage.
In Borth, there is the salt mine Borth, the last active mine in the Lower Rhine region. Rock salt is mined here, but the facility is not open to tourists on regular days.
The town of Rheinberg is the first major settlement. The TerraZoo is a possible side trip from the main route before continuing along the Rhine through beautiful natural areas.
The medieval Orsoy
The first traces of settlement date back to 750 BC. Today, the medieval past is very present. A large city wall and a fortress-like structure of Orsoy create a medieval ambiance. Orsoy originally became known for tobacco processing, but there is not much to see of it today. Nice cafes and restaurants provide the right quality of stay before taking the Orsoy ferry across the Rhine to the eastern bank in Duisburg-Walsum.
Keeping an eye on Father Rhine
The ferry marks the southern turning point of the RevierRoute. From now on, the tour leads north through the Walsumer Rheinaue nature reserve. After the Emscher estuary, the route briefly leaves the Rhine area in Voerde. The district of Götterswickerhamm is a popular destination right on the Rhine with some nice restaurants overlooking the river.
The renatured Lippe estuary delta
The tour continues north. As a special natural attraction, a newly constructed cycle path leads through the renatured estuary delta of the Lippe. Shortly before the Lippe reaches the Rhine, it branches out into many small arms, creating many small islets that serve as habitats for animals and plants. Finally, the route leads back to Wesel to the starting point of the tour.
For visitors, the Lower Rhine Museum Wesel is especially worth a visit in Wesel, housed in an impressive fortress.
