As this is a circular route, the starting and ending point is flexible, with Euskirchen being a possible starting point. It is centrally located and well connected to public transportation and the road network. The route initially follows the valley route network past the Seepark in Zülpich. From the Roman city with numerous cultural monuments, the tour continues to Kerpen. The Neffelbach valley route leads through the greenery past the Kommandeursburg and Burg Bergerhausen. A short detour to Schloss Loersfeld or Schloss Türnich with an attached organic farm café is also possible before the tour reaches the Erft behind Kerpen.
From there, the Erft cycle path continues through the most castle-rich region of Germany to its mouth at the Rhine. Along the way, landmarks such as Schloss Paffendorf, Schloss Bedburg, or Schloss Hülchrath are just a few examples. Hosts like the Brasserie Schloss Paffendorf look forward to a visit. Particularly noteworthy for art enthusiasts is also the Tageslichtmuseum Insel Hombroich.
At Neuss, a relaxed return tour along the Rhine awaits. Major cities, green riverbanks, and industrial romance create a diverse landscape. While the state capital Düsseldorf can only be admired from across the Rhine, the historic village of Zons is waiting to be discovered. The tour leads directly to the town with a medieval old town and well-preserved city wall. The Rhine then continues to the cathedral city.
Cologne presents itself along the Rhine at its most beautiful. The paths lead with a direct view of the water, the Rheinpark, and the Kölnmesse on the other side of the Rhine past the Cologne old town with historic flair and numerous hosts. Halfway between Cologne and Bonn, the green riverbanks of the Rhine merge with the industrial romance of Wesseling. Impressive industrial buildings appear between the trees and shrubs along the cycle paths.
The next stop on the circular tour is the Beethoven city of Bonn. In the center of Bonn, there is the Hofgarten with a view of Poppelsdorf Palace not far from the route. The Rhine then runs along the former government district. Those interested in history and exhibitions will find what they are looking for at the House of History. Changing exhibitions are presented here together with a permanent exhibition on the history of Germany since 1945. The fairytale-like Drachenburg Castle in the Siebengebirge is also clearly visible on the Bonn Rhine cycle path.
In Mehlem, the route leaves the Rhine, and cyclists can continue on the paths of the Apple Route or the Water Castles Route. Along the way, a stop in the historic town center of Rheinbach is recommended. The Römerkanal-Informationszentrum is located directly at the Naturparkzentrum Hiimmeroder Hof and provides insight into the time of the Roman Empire. After passing through orchards, the route then leads back to the starting point in Euskirchen.
