ON THREE VOLCANOES
The Wachtberg was once a fire-spitting mountain. It, as well as the neighboring volcanoes Stumpeberg, Hohenberg, and Dächelsberg, were formed around 25 million years ago. Only the "hard core" of these volcanoes made of the rocks trachyte or basalt, known as hard rock domes, has survived to this day. Both types of rock were also mined in quarries here. The 258-meter-high Wachtberg has been the namesake of the municipality of Wachtberg with its 16 villages since 1969. Its water tower supplies the surrounding area with drinking water. The Wachtberg is the starting point for a walk across the three volcanoes around Berkum.

THE HÜMERICH CIRCUIT
The approximately 6 km long circular route first leads up to the memorial on the Wachtberg with its fantastic panoramic view. Through forest and fields, you pass by the mysterious "ball" that has found secure footing on the Hümerich, and then to the Hohenberg with the famous cathedral quarry, which once enabled the continued construction of Cologne Cathedral. Finally, the Stumpeberg provides insight into its volcanic vent and a magnificent view over the Rhineland volcanic landscape. Along the way through Berkum, the local volcanic rock is showcased in many forms - from the grave cross to the path edging in the show garden to the well-preserved water castle Odenhausen.
