Discover a section of the Weser Cycle Path as a circular route on the main and alternative routes. You can switch sides of the Weser several times and determine the length of your bike tour yourself.
Coming from Verden, there are two opportunities to cross the Weser to reach Thedinghausen on the alternative route. First, via the Intscheder Weir or later with the ferry "Gentsiet" (weekends, May to October).
Verden on the Aller River developed in the 8th century from several settlement cores. The name comes from "ford" or "ferry". In the 9th century, the city became a bishopric. Verden was already a place of jurisdiction before Christianization. During the Saxon Wars, the "Massacre of Verden" took place here: around 4,500 rebellious Saxons are said to have been executed by Charlemagne in 782. The Sachsenhain still commemorates this today.
The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Cecilia is considered the landmark of the city. Built between 1290 and 1490, it is the first Gothic cathedral in Lower Saxony. The cloister, the Levite choir stall, and the baptismal font are worth seeing. Other historical buildings include the St. Andreas Church from the 12th century, the St. Johanniskirche built around 1150, and the Baroque Town Hall with its tower from 1903.
The city's history is exhibited in the Domherrenhaus, and everything about horses is shown in the German Horse Museum. From the ancient horse 55 million years ago, through historical riding and driving equipment, to modern tournament sports.
Past the Romanesque St. Sigismund Church in Daverden, the cycle path leads towards Achim. Just before Achim is Etelsen, known for its castle. It was built in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1886. Conrad Wilhelm Hase built the Neo-Gothic mausoleum in the castle park in 1873. The castle park was modernized around 1900 by Friedrich Kreiß from Braunschweig. There is always something going on here! Summer concerts, exhibitions, theater performances, readings, and singing performances. Civil weddings are also possible at Schloss Etelsen.
A few kilometers further, you reach the famous Badener Berge in Achim-Baden. According to legend, the pirate Klaus Störtebeker once hid here. Achim derives from "Acheim," meaning "place by the water." The pedestrian zone of the 30,000-inhabitant city, charmingly caught between modernity and old architecture, welcomes fresh produce to the traditional weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The attractions include Clüverhaus, St. Laurentius Church, Pforthaus, and the Bauernviertel.
Your tour now takes you over the Weser Bridge to the municipality of Thedinghausen. A detour to Schloss Erbhof in Thedinghausen is worth it! Via Morsum and Blender (windmill), you return to Verden.
You can also find the tour on Komoot.
