The main street in Lautenthal is named after the miner Kaspar Bitter. Around 1530, he discovered a rich ore vein on Kranichsberg. This was the beginning of mining in Lautenthal and the basis for the development of the town into a Free Mining Town. Today, the state-recognized climatic health resort is one of five districts of the city Langelsheim and offers its guests, in addition to a mining museum, about 200 km of well-maintained hiking trails through the beautiful Harz forest.
