After starting in Bienenbüttel, we reach Hohenbostel,
first mentioned in a document in 1324. To this day, the original form as a circular village
is recognizable. Hill graves and ground finds prove that people settled here early on.After a few kilometers we arrive in Grünhagen. Those who wish
can take a delicious break at the fish smokehouse. We continue to Eitzen I, beautifully situated in a wooded
hilly landscape. The area has been settled since the 8th century,
as evidenced by hill graves and ground finds such as ash remains, remains of pile dwellings,
storage pits, earthen artifacts. From this historically fascinating area we cycle
to Beverbeck. The village is one of the oldest in the region: it was first mentioned in
804. Old field names like Stein-Moor, Witt-Moor, and Spreng-Moor indicate
that Beverbeck is located on marshy ground. We cycle through Grünewald to Rieste. Here, 50
burial sites have been archaeologically proven. In 1890, a giant grave with around 1000
urns containing Langobards was discovered. The sites and finds no longer exist.
Records, documents, and other finds are preserved in a local
family museum.A few kilometers further we reach Varendorf.
Half-timbered barns and the so-called beet castles from around 1900 shape
the village's appearance. Here too, finds prove that people lived in prehistoric
times. The next stop is the Rockenmühle, which probably dates back to the 10th
century and was rebuilt around 1840. From here it's just a stone's throw to the Addenstorfer Heide. It houses 45 prehistoric
burial mounds that are still visible. Many of the graves are attributed to the older
Bronze Age around 1500 BC. Most of the deceased were buried in wooden coffins.
Around 1000 BC, cremation was introduced, and urns were placed in the
hill graves. After the "history lesson" in the heath, the tour continues
to Bargdorf. Archaeological finds from the area - two megalithic tombs that are now destroyed,
Stone Age and Bronze Age tools,
Early medieval shards - indicate that people have been living here long before
the first documented mention. From Bargdorf we cycle back to Bienenbüttel. Here
the bike tour can end with coffee, cake or ice cream, a refreshing visit
to the forest pool, or a break at the canoe station overlooking the Ilmenau.
