NA5 In the Bornbachtal

Suderburg, an old heath village and a modern university location, is the starting point of this varied circular tour through several nature and landscape conservation areas. If you start from the starting point, the Suderburg town hall, in a clockwise direction, you will pass through a monument-protected post road and the "Water Adventure Trail Hardautal" to Holxen and Holdenstedt. The Suderburg church on the bike path (with a nearly 1000-year-old fortified tower), a water mill, and a former castle are beautiful photo motifs.

A bit further over the countryside, you will reach the Bornbach, one of the most beautiful and ecologically valuable streams in the Lüneburg Heath. Rare animals such as otters and black storks live here. In Wrestedt, it is worth taking a look at the old manor house at the water mill. Shortly after Stadensen, the tour meets the Bornbach once again. Here, it is recommended to explore nature on foot, on a 6 km long signposted circular path.

The further ride leads several kilometers through the huge forest area "Südheide" and the conservation area "Blaue Berge und Hardautal". The weather and regular forestry work can sometimes make cycling more difficult. You may need to push your bike in some places. Finally, you will reach Hösseringen, a village still shaped by agriculture. A detour to the museum village, to the nearby Hardau Lake, or a panoramic view from the observation tower are recommended.

The tour continues to Räber, where the natural Räberspringbach flows through the ponds along the road. About 500 m after the end of the village, you should briefly leave the signposted route and follow the fieldstone path, which will take you to a biotope for butterflies and wall lizards.

Back on the road, the destination and starting point are almost in sight. Before that, the route takes a detour through a forest area. There, at the "Rieselwiese", you can learn about an irrigation technology invented in Suderburg that once revolutionized field agriculture.
