The many crosses along the paths and small streets north of Bautzen, the capital of the Sorbs, gleam golden. The lively religious culture is characteristic of the Slavic minority living here. Bilingual signs and countless wayside crosses accompany visitors along the entire route.
In many places, Sorbian can still be heard in the everyday life of the inhabitants.
Churches, monasteries and chapels in the small villages bear witness to the living Catholic faith of the Sorbs and invite you to pause and take a deep breath. Particularly impressive is the cemetery in Ralbitz, which is unique in the region, with its uniform crosses symbolizing equality before God. Sorbian customs are also visible to visitors several times throughout the year, e.g. at Easter time, at the bird wedding or at witch burnings.
