The circular hiking trail is named after the Saxon teacher, cantor, choirmaster and local historian Bruno Barthel (1856-1933), who spent most of his life in Großdrebnitz. Saxony's last king, Friedrich August III, even awarded Barthel the Saxon Cross of Merit for his extraordinary commitment to the well-being of Großdrebnitz and Kleindrebnitz. Barthel's tomb can still be seen today on the gable end of St. Martin's Church in Großdrebnitz.
