Sundial Trail - Taubenheim/Spree

The municipality of Sohland on the Spree consists of three villages that are closely connected.
A special feature in this association is the village of Taubenheim/Spree. It is the sundial village of Upper Lusatia.
Currently, 47 beautiful - historical and modern - sundials can be experienced.
These sundials served as timepieces in earlier times, indicating the exact local time based on the shadow-casting rods on the dials, which still do so today.
On house walls, gables, and in gardens in various variants, forms, and colors, the sundials are located to provide information about the former residents of the houses and to tell small stories. Twelve of these sundials were lovingly created and restored by the local graphic artist Martin Hölzel, also known as the "Father of the Sundials". Martin Hölzel lived from 1908 to 1994. He was the preserver and promoter of the tradition of sundials and the creator of many new clocks in Taubenheim.
The path can be explored individually, with registration for a guided tour or even in a slideshow. Each of the alternative timepieces can be reached on foot or by bike, with a few restrictions by car.
The sundials work best, of course, when the sun also allows for reading the time.
