The Aller Valley between Verden and Rethem is ideal for cycling and offers a wealth of impressions with its nature and culture. The Aller Cycle Path runs through the middle on a circular route with a total length of approximately 55 kilometers.
Always close to the Aller, the route leads with only a few minor inclines through a diverse landscape with meadows and pastures of the flat marshland as well as forested geest ridges. Between Otersen and Westen, there is the opportunity to cross the Aller with the solar ferry and thus halve the cycling distance.
Sights along the route: Historic city center of Verden with cathedral, Museum Domherrenhaus and German Horse Museum, Watermill Eitze, Amtshaus Westen, historic sheep pen district Hülsen, Londy Park with post windmill, Sculpture Park and old bakery. Also worth seeing is the ensemble of buildings including the town hall, Amtshaus, Marienkirche and Rethem Castle.
The tour starts in Verden in the historic city center. From Brückstraße, follow the Aller river path along the bulwark to the new cycle bridge and on to Wahnebergen. The route through Ahnebergen and Barnstedt to the village of Westen passes fields and pastures where you can see numerous storks.
The Amtshaus/Mehrgenerationenhaus in Westen is a good spot for a rest. Here you will also find the Radwegekirche St. Annen and in the immediate vicinity the Solar-Aller-Ferry "Marie Hoffmann" to Otersen (check ferry times).
Along the Aller dike, the Aller Cycle Path now leads to Hülsen, then past the sheep pen district from the 17th/18th century and finally over the old narrow-gauge railway track (now converted into a cycle path) to Rethem. To follow the circular tour, continue to Kirchwahlingen. Here you will find a 1000-year-old fortified church.
Through the marshland and geestland, the tour now heads back to Verden. The route takes you through Groß and Klein Häuslingen to Otersen, where lovingly preserved farmsteads shape the protected village landscape. A break can be taken at the Allercafé and village shop. The neighboring village of Wittlohe with its beautiful St. Jakobi Church from 1894 has retained its rural character. Continue on to Hohenaverbergen, Luttum, and Eitze, and finally along the "Dalschweg" through the forested geest landscape back to Verden.
If you not only want to do the day tour but also the entire approximately 320-kilometer long Aller Cycle Path from Verden via Celle to Magdeburg, you can find further information at www.allerradweg.de.
You can also find the Aller Cycle Path on Komoot.
