Löbau was the meeting place of the powerful Oberlausitzer Sechsstätdebund, founded in 1346, which also included Kamenz, Bautzen, Görlitz, Zittau and Lauban (Polish: Luban). The town's landmark is the cast-iron Friedrich August Tower on Löbauer Berg (450m), which is unique in Europe.
On the northern outskirts of the town, the "Schminke House", designed by Hans Scharoun for the family of pasta manufacturer Fritz Schminke, is well worth a visit. The house, affectionately known as the "Nudeldampfer" by the people of Löbau, is considered one of the most important buildings of classical modernism. Overnight stays are also possible on site. The beautiful market square with its defiant town hall and the nearby 13th century Nikolai Church are also well worth a visit.
