On April 12, 1983, the largest landslide in Baden-Württemberg occurred on the Mössinger Hirschkopf, a wooded slope on the steep northern edge of the Swabian Alb. The circular hiking trail, marked with blue panels and the number 2, leads through the middle of the "Hirschkopf landslide" nature reserve and provides a good view of the rock face.
In just a few hours, more than four million cubic meters of earth and rubble were moved, leaving behind a primeval landscape of around 80 hectares. In the meantime, natural vegetation has largely reclaimed the area. However, the consequences of the landslide are still visible - particularly impressively at the "Steilwand" viewpoint.
The nature reserve may only be entered on the designated paths. The best way to do this is on the marked landslide hiking trails 1 and 2.
The route 1 only leads up to the "Steilwand" viewpoint and back along the same route.
Route 2 is designed as a circular route. It is identical to route 1 up to the steep face, but then continues through the forest to the west and along the edge of the lower slide tongue down into the Buchbach valley. From there, a comfortable forest path leads back to the parking lot.</p
