Wittekindsweg

This popular hiking trail in the Wiehengebirge was named after the Saxon duke who was considered the greatest adversary of Charlemagne. In the northwest German region, this trail is known as "the classic" among hiking trails. In addition, the Wittekindsweg is characterized by its course along the ridge of the entire Wiehengebirge, an earth-historical "main artery" of the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita.
Starting at the historic marketplace in Osnabrück, the Wittekindsweg leads through the scenic Nettetal to the hiking junction Mühlenort in Bramsche-Engter. From here, the trail continues on the densely forested ridge of the Wiehengebirge towards the east. The destination of the hike is the Porta Westfalica, the valley through which the Weser River flows into the North German Plain. The Wittekindsweg is part of the European long-distance hiking trail E 11. It starts in The Hague and connects the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland over its 2500 km. Thus, it is also a symbol of peaceful international understanding in a growing Europe.
The hiking trail is marked by a white-red marking. The markings are usually clearly visible at the respective intersections, but they may be placed a few meters further along the correct path. Hiking guides take care of the trail markings voluntarily, but weather conditions or vandalism may cause markings to disappear. If you notice a spot without a clear trail marking, please inform the Wiehengebirge association (wgv-weserems@t-online.de).
