Municipality of Scharnebeck - the gateway to the Lüneburg Elbe Valley floodplain

In Scharnebeck, you can explore the former largest ship lift in the world. On the deck of an excursion boat, you can witness the lifting process. The eye enjoys a wide view over the Elbmarsch. For those who want to sniff even more fresh air, they can try out the neighboring climbing forest. From a height of 3 - 4 m for the little ones and up to 15 m for the brave, there is something for everyone.
A bike tour through the Elbmarsch is worthwhile. Bikes can be rented at the Tourist Information opposite. A particularly beautiful path leads directly along the Elbe-Side Canal to its mouth at Artlenburg. Here you can watch the passing ships again and again. In Artlenburg, an old gallery Dutch windmill from the 19th century awaits you, which can be explored both from the outside and inside. Information boards at the old ferry terminal provide information about the history of the former significant location. The church is also worth a closer look. The path continues on the charming Elbe Cycle Path towards Hohnstorf. It is a pleasure to enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the old Elbe sailor town of Lauenburg from the Elbe dike promenade. If you want to continue the journey in the Elbe floodplain, you should visit Hittbergen in the marshland. Hittbergen's mill, built in 1887 with a gallery, is worth seeing. The windmill was shut down in 1961. The mill is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The Martinkirche in Hittbergen is a Neo-Gothic building with a sturdy tower from the Middle Ages. The area around Barförde and Hittbergen is still strongly influenced by narrow land parcels, known as "Hufen," an old unit of land measurement.
In Lüdersburg, you will find one of the most popular wedding churches in the district and a small baroque castle. Numerous restaurants invite you to stop by. The town is a must for golfers.
