The idyllic half-timbered town of Lüchow is located in Lower Saxony's "wild east" and serves as the capital of the Hanoverian Wendland. The town was first mentioned in a document during the time of Frederick I Barbarossa in 1158 and was granted city rights in 1293. Even today, a tower from the late Middle Ages that was part of the town fortifications still stands, now used as a bell tower for St. Johannis Church since 1691. In the 16th century, Lüchow was struck by the plague, followed by two severe fires that left most of the town in ruins. The residents painstakingly rebuilt Lüchow, only to have the town almost completely destroyed by another fire in 1811, leaving only a few houses and the castle tower standing. In 1930, the first museum of the district was established in the tower. Today, Lüchow is a lively town that offers a wealth of nature, art, and history - and is home to the world's only "Rolling Stones Fan Museum."
