The Breitenstein is a landscape conservation area with orchards. In the meantime, there have been sightings of wolves in the Odenwald. The animal described here animal described here probably bears the title "Last wolf of the last millennium in the Odenwald".
Start at the hiking parking lot with the Breitenstein Nature Park hiking board. Follow the nature park trail "yellow 4" for about 200 m on a paved road, then ascend on field paths through the Breitensteinäcker into the forest, continue slightly uphill on forest paths. When the path leads downhill again, after 250 m you reach the Wolfsstein, the monument to the last wolf of the Odenwald. This was donated by the Eberbach Lions Club in August 2000. From there, continue along the path back to the parking lot. Info: About the wolf itself: The animal, which was killed on March 12, 1866, was observed by forest warden Walter from Wagenschwend as it feasted on an animal carcass. The wolf fled through the woods, with the forest ranger at its heels, until it found its lair near Mülben. The forest warden alerted the margravial hunter Kinzer, who was able to summon all the men of the Winterhauch communities who were able to bear arms for the hunt in no time at all; there were 120 marksmen and 130 beaters. In the evening, the wolf came in front of the shotgun of Strümpfelbrunn marksman Karl Kraft. However, he did not hit it fatally - the wolf was able to slink away in the darkness. The next day, the hunters followed the blood trail in the snow and released the wounded animal with a mercy shot. After that, the wrangling began as to whether the wolf had been shot by someone from Strümpfelbrunn or Schollbrunn. In any case, the dead animal was carted to the town hall in Eberbach that evening.
