Riberhus Castle in Ribe, Southern Denmark, was built in the 12th century under King Niels as a fortification in the Danish borderlands. The castle was largely destroyed in the 17th century, and the remains, known as Riberhus Slotsbanke, are accessible to visitors.
The exact founding date of the castle in Ribe is no longer known; by 1127 at the latest, it was habitable enough for King Niels to host the wedding of his son Magnus there. Riberhus Castle served as the regular residence of the Danish court, which was still nomadic at that time, from the 12th to the 14th century. It was notably known as the residence of Queen Dagmar, who was highly revered in the region, and today a sculpture on the castle mound commemorates her. After the 14th century, the castle was less frequently inhabited and partly fell into disrepair. During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish soldiers occupied the fortress, which was subsequently largely destroyed by continuous bombardment from enemy forces. The ruins were used as a quarry starting in 1685.
