The ponds in Øster Hornum

The City Pond is a central point on the path, tasting of Nature and Technology. Back in time during World War I, people with technical skill established a small hydroelectric power plant here. Water from the city's springs was dammed here, which marked the beginning of the pond on the east side of Nibevej. The plant supplied the city with electricity, especially for street lighting for a couple of hours every evening. When there was no more water, power ceased and thus: Good night! In winter, this was quite relevant as there were open ditches along Nibevej, and access to the houses was via narrow footbridges. The plant was closed down in 1924 when the city was connected to the alternating current grid. In the mid-1930s, the pond was transformed into the current park-like City Pond. The water in the City Pond comes from the many springs that emerge in the city and form the source of Hasseris Å. Immediately north of the City Pond stood the city's Poor House until the mid-1960s, later called the Municipality House. It is possible to walk around the city ponds.
