Frijsenborg Castle, the seat of the County of Frijsenborg. The estate was purchased in 1665 by the nobleman Mogens Frijs, who was later elevated to the rank of count, after which the County of Frijsenborg was established in 1672 from his numerous estates. The oldest main building was erected around 1700 by Niels Mogensen, Count Friis. The current building was constructed between 1860 and 1867 in Renaissance style while retaining the old walls according to designs by Meldahl. Owner since 1982 is Bendt Tido Hannibal, Count von Wedell. Frijsenborg Castle, due to its once enormous extent, has influenced Hammel and the surrounding area. Many buildings, roads, and facilities in the area testify to this. In addition to the main estates and the associated gamekeeper and forester lodges, there is a long row of characteristic service residences.

The Frijsenborg forests Hammel Skov, Kildedal Skov, Lystskoven, Pøtmølle Skov, Frijsendal Bakker, Gejlund Bakker, and Haurum Skov are collectively referred to as the Frijsenborg forests.
