Munkevejen R88, Skelby - Sorø

The stage goes from Skelby southwest through the forests of Tvede Vænge and here north to Kastrup Overdrev and Dyrehave.

Borup Riis

At Borup Riis, traces of ancient agricultural systems from the Viking Age can still be seen today. Archaeological investigations have also revealed several farm sites. The area has not been inhabited since the Middle Ages and was likely abandoned due to climate change. In the years after 1200, there were several wet summers and harsh winters. Borup Riis' fields could not sustain the small local population, which sought other places.

Hørhaven

At Hørhaven, there is an opportunity to take a break and climb up the hill: Bavnen. From Bavnen, there is a view over almost the entire Tystrup Bavelse Nature Park. With a bit of luck, local breeding pairs of sea eagles can be seen. It is also possible to reach the lakeshore.

The village of Tystrup

From here, Munkevejen is followed north along Tystrup Lake towards Tystrup Church, which has a truly unique location. Both the view over Tystrup Lake and the frescoes inside make it worth a visit. In the village, there are several old half-timbered farms that show how the farms looked in earlier times. By the church, the protected tenant's house can be seen with its traditional thatched roof and half-timbering.

Kongskilde Friluftsgård

Munkevejen continues to several scenic areas by Kongskilde Friluftsgård. Here, there is a nature exhibition and an aquarium with fish from the lake. Kongskilde is an old mill farm located next to the dammed mill lake. A small path leads down to Tystrup Lake. Here, several interesting plants can be seen, including from a footbridge and a spring. Near the lake, there is a long barrow from the Stone Age. At the lake itself, it is possible to swim and make a fire in designated places. The great crested grebe is especially seen diving for fish on the lake. Here, there is peace for the soul.

Alternatively, one can climb "The Mountain" behind the outdoor farm, from which there is a view over the western part of the nature park.

Forests near Sorø

The route passes Suserup Forest, which is a "natural forest," i.e., it is managed without intervention. There has been forest here for 6000 years, and one is only allowed to walk on the designated paths. A trip through Suserup Forest is a journey back in time to the old original primeval forest.

The last part of the route towards Sorø is along beautiful forest roads in Sorø Sønderskov before arriving at the old monastery town.
