The characteristic flat terrain of South Lolland is due to the reclaimed areas. The entire southern coast of Lolland is encircled by a dike that was established after the great storm surge in 1872. During the storm surge, so much water flowed into the old Rødby Fjord that it became connected to Nakskov Fjord to the west, resulting in Southwest Lolland becoming an independent island. Rødby Fjord was subsequently reclaimed, and the drainage was finally completed in 1966.
Starting in Kramnitze, the bike route goes west through Hummingen. Along the coastline between the two towns, the old Rødby Fjord went inland.
