Originally, Avernakø consisted of two islands, Avernak and Korshavn, which were joined in 1937 by a dam called Drejet.
Avernakø is 8 km long and there is a shop and several farm shops on the island. As one of the few places in Denmark, Avernakø has preserved the tradition of maypoles. For Pentecost, a maypole is raised in Avernak Town and a maypole in Munke.
You arrive at Avernakø at the western end of the island, where there is a cozy harbor café, which in the summer is a good place to wait for the ferry or grab a snack before you continue. Take a trip from one end of the island to the other. On the way, you pass the church, the maypoles, Drejet, and reach Kappelodden, where there is a good, but deep, bathing beach.
At Nakke Odde and Munke Strand, there are more child-friendly beaches. If you visit during the breeding season, you may be lucky enough to hear the rare calling of the bell frog. On the way back, you can enter the church and see the copies of the six gold bowls with sun signs that were found on the island in 1685.
