Culture and nature in Assens

Start at Assens Harbor (1) and head towards Mariendals Beach (2), which with its bathing bridges and shallow sandy bottom constitutes a really nice bathing beach. Continue along Mariendalsvej Assens' “Silver Coast” - the new, beautiful villa neighborhood with a view of Bågø.
Drive north towards Aborg (3), which in the old days was a large and significant village with many farms and houses. At Aborgvej, you can take a detour to Aborg Beach, which has a nice bathing bridge. Further along, you pass the dam and pumping station at Aborg Nor (4). Puge Mølle Å flows out here into Lillebælt. In the Viking Age, one could sail up Puge Mølle Å, and the name Aborg indicates that there has been a fort at least on the south side. The bay has a rich bird life.
The next stop is “Baunet” (5), which is a burial mound with a shelter and a fire pit at the top; at the foot of the mound lies a good picnic area with tables and benches as well as a small playground.
In the whole area around the river valley, many different vegetables are grown, such as asparagus, onions, strawberries, peas, potatoes, cabbage, and corn, which are sold in season from Torup Bakkegård on Middelfartvej just north of Sandager.
From the hilltop on the road, you can see the whole Puge Mølle Ådal with both Sandager and Barløse Churches, which are both official navigational marks.
You pass by Barløse Church (6), which is located high above the landscape. The church is from the 12th century and one of the first Romanesque churches that were built. The next stop is Puge Mølle (7), which can be recognized by the old half-timbered building that houses the water mill. The mill has existed on the site since the 16th century. You also pass Holevad Church (8), the last of the three churches around Puge Mølle Å. A rich area in the Middle Ages.
Drive past the Brahesborg estate (9), where there is a nice view of the main building from 1656 with the names of Jørgen Brahe and Anna Gyldenstjerne from the courtyard. The Renaissance house was remodeled in 1756 to a classical style. Note the beautiful suspension bridge over the moat.
The last stop is Gallery Sulegården (10), which is a fine representative of the West Funen sulegårde. A sulegård has a special timber construction, with suler supporting the roof structure. This gives a high ceiling and the possibility of giving the barn rounded corners. Follow the route back to Assens.
