Esrum Å Trail

Esrum Å Trail is a 4.5 km long walking and cycling route from Tegners Museum/Rusland to Søborg Sø. The trail allows for hiking through the Esrum Ådal, which was previously reserved for the few. The route also passes by Villingerød Church, fields belonging to organic vegetable grower Birkely, and Gilleleje Golf Club, as well as the villages of Ferle and Dragstrup. You can take a break by the riverside, where there is a picnic table set. Here you can enjoy the birds and Esrum Å while immersing yourself in the exciting cultural history of Esrum Canal. Esrum Å has been used for floating timber from Gribskov to Copenhagen in the 19th century and is today a protected archaeological site. Esrum Å is one of Gribskov's finest watercourses, and studies show a high density of sea trout, river crabs, and brook lampreys. There is a rich birdlife in the area. Cranes, sea eagles, red kites, kestrels, gray geese, and lapwings can be seen flying over the area. There are also many small birds in the area, including nightingales. The route goes through low-lying wet meadows, and during rainy periods, there may be a need to restrict access to the trail. On certain days, there may also be closures due to hunting.
