Wild Track, Dybsø Fjord - Præstø Fjord

The route runs across Zealand at its narrowest point and follows the boundary of Northern Europe's largest game reserve.

The Game Reserve

In 1616, King Christian IV established Northern Europe's largest game reserve, covering 400 km² in South Zealand, from Tappernøje inn by Præstø fjord to the Game Reserve inn by Dybsø fjord. It was enclosed by a 15 km fence across the region.

A Game Reserve

Was a hunting area that the king established as his very own hunting ground. Here, he had exclusive rights to hunt. The area could be enclosed by walls, deep ditches, and fences, and marked with so-called game reserve posts.

The game reserve stretched over Røttinge, Hammer, south of Snesere, north of Engelholm and Nylykkegård's fields, and out to the Game Reserve inn by Dybsø fjord. The enclosure was constructed in various ways, depending on the area's characteristics, consisting of walls, strong brushwood fences, ditches, and natural waterways. At either end of the reserve, posts were driven deep into the fjord as a solid pile structure to keep the animals inside.

The route is part of a collaboration with neighboring municipalities and the Nature Agency in the project "On the Trail of Southwest Zealand Nature," which is financially supported by the Nordea Foundation.
