It is the chronicler Saxo Grammaticus who around the year 1200 tells the story of the Jutland chieftain's son Amled. His father was killed by his uncle, who then married Amled's mother. Amled avenged his father's murder, but only after pretending to be foolish and mad, so that his uncle would not suspect him. We primarily know the story from Shakespeare's play "Hamlet," which was published in 1603. Amled is said to have lived around the year 500, and when he died, he is believed to have been buried at Ammelhede near Randers, which is the destination of this trip.
