Around the remains of the Gudenå delta (8 km)

Just before the outlet in Randers Fjord, the Gudenåen river formed a delta over the millennia. The farmers cut hay in the lush meadows of the wide river valley, and the area was also extensively used as grazing land for the cows. However, it frequently happened that the Gudenåen overflowed its banks, flooding the meadows and the surrounding fields, which led to the delta being removed in 1951. Dikes were built, cutting off the Gudenåen from Vorup Enge and later from Hornbæk Enge north of the river. Once the water was pumped away, it became possible to grow grain. In 2009, however, efforts began to recreate the large wetland areas along the Gudenåen near Randers. This tour takes you all the way around the old delta, with opportunities to observe the bird and animal life from two birdwatching towers. The packed lunch can be enjoyed on the bench in the pavilion.
