The Bredkilde route in Kastbjerg valley (4.7 km round trip)

The Bredkilde Route is a circular tour in the wide river valley between Sem and Enslev by the spring Bredkilden. The Bredkilde Route is marked with blue triangles.

Starting point: There is free parking without time limits at the sognegård in Sem, 8990 Havndal, at the parking lot at Semvej 45, 8990 Havndal and at the Fosevej parking lot, 8990 Havndal.

Experiences: On the Bredkilde Route, you can experience living bushes, grazed meadows, and wet areas, which are good habitats for species like the nightingale, which benefits from insects and berries. Bredkilden is a spring located south of the village of Sem, which provides both drinking water and water for the river and rich meadows. Rich meadows are waterlogged meadows with lime content, which are low in nutrients and rich in species, such as various species of orchids that bloom in early summer. The meadows harbor a diversity of plants like cuckoo flowers, sphagnum moss, and reed, but also thousands of years of history about human use of the area. The Bredkilde Route goes right past the site where archaeologists have found Scandinavia's oldest plank road, 4,900 years old. Below the Enslev Hills lies a rise where the fortified site Ovsgård was located in the Middle Ages. The river has been heavily regulated and straightened but has received new bends from a nature project from 2006-2017. Along the way, you can take a break on the Spectacle Bridge, where there is a table and bench set so you can enjoy your lunch in the middle of the river.

Note: The paths on the Bredkilde Route are often flooded, so hiking or rubber boots are recommended.
