Eskilsø - Yellow route

Welcome to the Trails on Eskilsø

Eskilsø is located in the National Park of Skjoldungernes Land and is the largest island in Roskilde Fjord. There is neither a bridge nor a ferry to Eskilsø, but you can sail to the small harbor on the island's west side, which is the only legal access to the island. You are a welcome guest on the island, and Eskilsø's four trails are open for foot traffic, while the rest of the island is reserved for nature. The trails are footpaths without pavement. Accessibility may therefore vary with the season, water level, and growth of plants. The foundation aims to have the trails cleared several times a year. There are 4 marked routes on Eskilsø. They lead to good viewpoints, from which the trips return the same way. The shortest routes are the green route at about 1.5 km and the red route at about 2.5 km. The longest route, the yellow route, is about 4 km long but can be shortened by about 0.5 km each way via the blue route (see the map). The trails are marked with posts. In some places, the trails pass through enclosures via gates and paths that must be closed again after passage. Eskilsø is owned by the Nature Preservation Fund of Erick and Ingrid Struckmann. The fund was established in 1974 from the inheritance of Erick and Ingrid Struckmann and aims to buy, protect, and care for natural areas. The fund purchased Eskilsø in 1982. The island was previously owned by Selsø-Lindholm Estate. Eskilsø is an important habitat for many bird species, which over time have found refuge in the island's many undisturbed wetlands. Therefore, the island is also protected by a nature conservation designation from 1985, and as a wildlife reserve and Natura 2000 area. This protection means that access is prohibited on and along large parts of the island. The island's houses, Eskilsøgård and Eskilsøhus, are inhabited year-round. In consideration of the island's rich bird life and the grazing animals, it is not permitted to bring dogs to Eskilsø.
