Nihøjestien

Humans have always settled together where the conditions were present to ensure life's sustenance. Water and land, preferably with a bit of shelter from the wind, have determined the location of most settlements as our many small towns emerged. Øster Hornum had it all when a small community arose here about 1000 years ago, perhaps after centuries of moving around. But people have actually always lived here. The Bronze Age people buried their most significant individuals up on Frendrup Nihøje, which at a height of 103 m offers the finest view of Himmerland. It is recommended to bring binoculars on the trail. For example, in good weather, from Nihøjene, one can see all the way to Blokhus. The Nihøje path runs through very varied and hilly terrain. Start the tour from Kløverstiportalen in the center, walk along Gammel Skolevej towards the southwest and take the tour clockwise. To the west, one walks along the old priest's ditch, which separated the rectory land from Abildgård land to the south. A marked detour from the priest ditch leads up to Stodshøj (92 m.a.s.l), from where there is almost a 360-degree view. From here, it can be seen where Flemming B. Muus and three other SOE agents were "dropped" on March 11, 1943. The journey continues north along Harrildgårdsvej. Here, one can spot the Iron Age landscape, which consisted of a varied mosaic of heaths, bogs, meadows, small forests, villages, and fields. From Harrildgårdsvej, one can see the two burial mounds Stærhøje and Sekshøje. On the way to Nihøjene, one walks a stretch over Frendrup Hede, where traces of old roads can be seen. The path continues into the forest, where the stream is the old parish boundary between Vokslev and Øster Hornum. The final stretch before Nihøjene follows an old road to Nibe, which was discontinued around the year 1900. At the entrance to Nihøjene stands the town's baptismal certificate in the form of a bowl sign stone. Traces of the many tools created by the flint smith continuously appear. At the Local Archive in Øster Hornum, one can see a very fine flint collection of the items found by two local amateur archaeologists around and in the town.
