Red route - Vestre Stigtehave, North Langeland

There are three marked hikes in the Nature Agency's forests on North Langeland: Vestre Stigtehave at 3.3 km, Bræmlevænge at 1.6 km, and Mørkholm at 2.7 km.

Langeland's beech forests are among Denmark's most beautiful. And Vestre Stigtehave just north of Lohals is no exception. The forest is some of the densest you can get to a primeval forest on Langeland. The forest edge grows right down to the coast, and between the crooked trunks, there are views of the Great Belt and the Funen coast.

The production of bricks played a significant role on North Langeland in the 16th and 17th centuries. Here there was both clay soil, wood for firing, and a short distance to the coast from where the bricks were shipped. In Vestre Stigtehave, you might encounter depressions in the forest floor north of Stigtehavevej near Stigtehavehus. This is where clay was once excavated.

In several places in the forest floor, you can see mounds about 1 meter high. These are remnants of the root cakes from the trees that fell during a hurricane in November 1967.
