Lundager Forest, around the old Ash

Round trip in Lundager Forest that goes to the bench by the old Ash and back to the parking lot. The route is flat and accessible for wheelchairs and electric scooters with wide all-terrain wheels.

The old Ash is the oldest tree in the Lundager afforestation project and has previously been one of many trees and shrubs in a living hedge. You can see that the tree has been pollarded in the past - a pruning method where the top shoots are cut off and used, for example, for hedges. The tree develops a very thick trunk with a round "ball" on top where the top shoots are cut off.

The tree is hollow which means that part of the tree is dead. Dead wood is a habitat for many different insects, bacteria, and fungi - so the old Ash is a true biodiversity gem. Take good care of the old Ash, it is not climbable, but best admired from a distance.
