South Zealand Trail. Næstved - Basnæs

The path goes through a cultural landscape that has been shaped over millennia in an interplay between nature and man. Here, traces from past generations can be seen in many places.

The town and the water
In Næstved's Åhavn, the ancient market town of Næstved has its connection to the world's oceans through the mouth of the Suså River. Ships have sailed here since the Late Iron Age, about 1,500 years ago.

On the way to the mouth in Karrebæk Fjord, the old villages of Grimstrup and Aaderup, which flank the river, are passed. In Aaderup, the leprosy hospital Sct. Jørgensgården was located in the Middle Ages, with its chapel marked in the grass in front of Denmark's Radio, Regionalen.

Walk on both sides of the old course of the Suså River, which is cut off by the Canal that has brought ships to Næstved across Grimstrup Næs and Ydernæs since 1938. On the way to Appenæs, Rønnebækken is passed near its mouth in Susåen. In Rønnebækken, there is a wildlife passage up to Rønnebæksholm.

Gavnø and the fjord
Out in the old village of Appenæs, a panorama can be seen from right to left: the mouth of the Suså River, the tip of Grimstrup Næs, the old mouth of the river Even, the tip of Ydernæs, Karrebæk Fjord, and Gavnø. Follow the coast down towards Appenæs Hoved and look over to the manor Gavnø, which can also be visited. In the 14th and 15th centuries, there was a convent on Gavnø, which was transformed into a manor around 1580. The church of the Dominican nuns is now the church of the manor.

Vejlø and the church
Through paths and roads in the forest, the highway to Vejlø is reached. Here, Fladsåen and the surrounding meadows are passed. In Vejlø's medieval church, among other things, Slattenpat can be seen, which is Abel Schrøder's supporting figure for the pulpit from 1669. The troll is interpreted as the good troll that supports the church in contrast to the Fladså troll, which wanted to destroy the churches. The giver was Niels Trolle of Gavnø!

West of Vejlø lies the round barrow Tinghøj from the Neolithic. On the journey through Vejlø Skov, the beautiful meeting of the forest with the fjord coast can be seen. Here, there is a view over Enø Overdrev, Karrebæksminde, and Gavnø. With luck, sea eagles can be seen around Gavnø. At your feet lies Karlsgab, where a terrible pirate and his castle have sunk into the sea!
