For centuries, there has been a dispute between the miller at Nyborg Slot Mill and the farmers of Hjulby over the water. The miller needed the water as power for the mills to grind grain into flour, and the farmers needed the water for their fields for grazing and haymaking. Compromises were reached and sluices were built so that both parties could benefit from the life-sustaining water. The first known sluice system is from around the year 1200, and the current Kullerup sluice dates from 1951. Today, the area with its fields, bogs, and small forests is part of the municipality's recreational areas, and with the help of a path across the estate of Juelsberg's land, one can also pass by the area near Hjulby Lake.
