A visit to the plantation can provide insight into the history of the heath plantation. During replanting, conifers were planted. The oldest trees in the plantations today are noble fir, Norway spruce, and other conifer species. Conifers grow quickly and have straight trunks.
Today, more broadleaf trees are being planted in the plantation. This is partly due to the fact that the raw wood market is global, so the wood we use for construction today often comes from other countries. There has also been a popular and political desire for forestry to be more based on native Danish tree species. They are adapted to the local climate and environment - and are habitats for more insects and fungi than the introduced conifer species.
