The canal is 4.4 km long and 3 m deep. It was dug by hand between 1856-1861 by about 400 workers, who mainly came from Germany. Frederick VII personally inaugurated the canal with a cannon salute and thousands of attendees. Although the canal has not been in use for almost 90 years, it still appears authentic with its mooring posts, canal keeper's house, canal staff houses, and swing bridge. In 2007, the canal was voted as one of the 7 wonders of Northern Jutland.
