The red route is the longest trip around the Bælum Sønderskov area. The tour takes you around most of the area's mosaic of vegetation: older deciduous forest, coniferous plantation, self-grown mixed forest, and Christmas tree cultures. Large parts of the forest area have sandy soil and a prehistory as heathland. In the early or mid-20th century, the previously widespread heaths were cultivated or planted, mostly with conifers. The trip along the red route illustrates how the landscape in areas with poor soil and heath was exploited and developed in that way. The surface of the path is a gravel forest road and forest trails.
