The Mountain Path

The Mountain Path leads through a hilly area with good viewpoints, which is elevated above the surrounding terrain. In addition, the path passes through Eskebjerg Vesterlyng.

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng, Zealand's largest coastal heath, offers a varied flora and fauna. On Vesterlyng's grasslands and moist depressions, heather, hawthorn, and juniper bushes grow, among others. Here, one can also find the yellow meadow ant and several species of orchids. Vesterlyng was previously used for grazing by the surrounding villages but was protected in 1945. Back in the Stone Age, Vesterlyng was covered by the sea, but as the seabed rose and the area was overlain by windblown sand, the landscape developed into what is seen today. In the southern part of Vesterlyng, there are several moving dunes, while in the northern part is the beach meadow Tranevejle. The whole of Vesterlyng is fenced in, and during the summer months, free-roaming cows and horses are present, which form an important part of the nature conservation.

Højsted and Højsted Overdrev

At Højsted, there is a view over Sejerø Bay and the open landscape, which slopes gently down towards the bay and the protected Eskebjerg Vesterlyng. Højsted Overdrev was previously used as grazing grounds for the farms in the surrounding villages.

Between Højsted and Hjembæk

The area's geology is the result of the immense forces that unfolded during the last Ice Age about 15,000 years ago. The undulating terrain was created by large ice blocks that remained after the ice had retreated. Later, the ice blocks melted, leaving depressions - "dead ice holes" - that shape the landscape today.
