Hindemade - trip to the bird tower

On this round trip to the bird tower, there are ample opportunities to experience the bird life at and on Hindemade Lake. The route has a smooth and firm surface suitable for wheelchair users. One walks along the lake, into the forest, up slopes where the bird tower can be visited, offering a view over Hindemade Lake.

Hindemade has been a marsh area traversed by small streams and Tørning River. In 1934, drainage was increased with the help of ditches and a pump station. Furthermore, Tørning River was regulated and Tørning Canal was built on the northern side of the area. The area was subsequently used for agriculture. In the early 1990s, nature restoration was carried out in Hindemade.

The areas were purchased by the state, and the drainage was stopped. Tørning River regained its natural course, and a new wetland area was established. About 45 of Hindemade's 65 ha have been flooded, and 5 islands have been created where the many birds of the area can be undisturbed by the public. In addition to enriching the area with increased wildlife, the wetland area also functions as a kind of treatment plant, as it retains some of the nutrients that would otherwise burden Haderslev Dam.
