Lignite is formed from water and swamp plants that lived about 15 million years ago. The plants were first converted into peat. The subsequent ice ages deposited sand, clay, and ice on top of the peat. The pressure from these layers gradually transformed the peat into lignite. During World War I and II, there was a shortage of fuel, so lignite was mined in large open pits.
