The site is part of the protected Busbjerg area. Bølmesbakke is a hilly heath area and is the largest contiguous heathland in Favrskov Municipality (a total of 11.5 hectares). Sheep/goats roam the area, helping to keep the trees down so that the heath does not overgrow.
There is a parking lot right by Bølmesbakke on the south side, at Møllebakkevej, and from here there is access to the area through an opening in the fence. Most paths are created by the grazing animals.
In the summer months, there are quite a few day butterflies that benefit from the short-grassed and warm slopes, including the spotted broad-bordered bee hawk moth, which is quite rare nationally. At Bølmesbakke, one may also be lucky enough to see the beautiful metal ground beetle, a beetle that shines like metal.
