The culverts at Skærsåvej

The route along the hollow ways is 0.6 km and marked with red pictograms. There is a small detour to a viewpoint, which is marked with blue pictograms.

The hollow ways have likely been worn down in the sloping terrain due to the traffic that has occurred over the Gudenå River at Holmens Camping from ancient times up until the Viking Age around the year 1000. This place is called Faldgårde.

At Faldgårde, archaeologists have found a bridge structure over the Gudenå River from the last half of the 10th century – from the reign of Harald Bluetooth. When the monks entered the Søhøjlandet in the 12th century, they built new watermills and dammed new lakes.

It is likely that traffic over the Gudenå River at Faldgårde ceased when the monks from Øm Kloster erected the watermill Siimgårdsmølle (now Rye Mølle) in the early Middle Ages.

From then on, the Gudenå River was crossed at the mill dam, where Rodelundvej also crosses the Gudenå River today.
